I am as dissapointed as anybody, but to put things in perspective UCSB was picked to finish FIRST in their league, and we were picked to finish LAST. We played them tough and only lost by 5. I hate to make excuses, but:
1. Larry Davis is out and he is probably the best or second best player on the team when healthy. 2. We played alot of the game without Garibay who is our most consistent post scorer and one of our most important post defenders. 3. We let them shoot 62.5 percent from long range.
Turn any three of these things around and we probably win the game.
Despite the high expectations at the beginning of the year by the Lion faithful, I doubt this is a game that we marked down as a sure fire win. Yes, we could have won this game, but UCSB is a great team filled with upperclassmen that should win their league. They are undefeated as of now, and yet we only lost by 5. I know we can be a great team this season, but I think it might be by conference time rather than right away, especially if Larry and Edgar are out for any longer.
Also I know the transative properties shouldn't always be applied in sports, but it is often a nice indicator. San Francisco lost to UCSB by 11 and we lost by 5. San Francisco was picked to finish 4th we were picked to finish last. I think we are making good progress and expect us to finish at least 5th or higher this season in a tough WCC.
Go Lions

lamb - I like your attitude! We are still building the program and the progress looks good to me. We were competitive to the end and the made key shots and FTs when on the line. I am enjoying the season so far and am optimistic for the future but would, like everyone else, prefer more W's at this time.

I don't care about being competitive I want to win. You give money, donations etc., buy off on a new coach then a change plus gutting the players there, I can get down with it but I want wins. Yankees won last year with a new skipper and then won it all this year. The money were paying last year was a get to know year this year is I know year and get it done..... I'm not about morale victories we got that with Tention I not taking it with Goods by way of Banyo. I drank the Kool Aid know I want results and results now.

We fought a good fight but this was a big step backwards. We really go embarssed on the boards. We could not guard the three to save our lives. Or starters all had good games but you won't win too many games with the defensive effort we showed tonight. I really didn't like the energy we had...the team just doesn't seem to gelling as they should be. Some random thoughts - Ashley seems to be in the dog house - Ron Ron is really lost in the rotation - Given is doing great for the time he is getting. - Timmy is not doing much for us - I have a very bad feeling about Edgar's injury

I like the attitude, too, wr and lamb.
Viney is even better than advertised. As is Garibay. Once Davis is healthy, I think we will all be quite pleased.
Young stepped up tonight. Just need a little more consistency from the guards.
The biggest problem is defense, and that is correctable. Maybe we need to start playing a 1-3-1 or 2-3 zone. I think this would be especially necessary if Garibay is out for an extended time, because we could get destroyed down low (even worse than we already are).
If we can fix the defense and get healthy, I agree that we can still make a run for the middle of the WCC this year, and then next year, with everyone back, put forth a run toward at least an NIT berth. Go Lions!

Did anyone see Edgar's injury? On KXLU, Lampe made it seem like Edgar banged knees with someone. If that is all it is, then hopefully it is a bruise. What did you all see?

I was at the game and he was able to walk off the court under his own power. I think it is just a bruised knee, but we will see the prognosis on Wednesday...

DCLEM, We can all tell you are a bitter Tention/OJ fan, no need to hide that. However I would love to refute most of your points. 1. " If one player is out who cares we need to win" Larry, Edgar and Ashley are three of our top players, especially Larry. Injuries can derail a season and make a great team bad. Case in point, Brandon Worthy and the LMU Lions. 2. "OJ and his squad won bottom line." This point is true, I'll give you that, however they were supposed to win. We all wanted the Lions to win, but the truth is they were picked to finish first in their league this year and we were picked to finish last. This is the type of game in the Tention year's were when would have been BLOWN OUT, yet this team kept fighting and almost pulled out the W. 3. "I guess I can say the outcast were right to leave because I don't see anything better going on here" I can't see how you can possibly believe this one. The only players who can possibly make this argument are OJ because he transfered to one of the better Big West Teams or Max Craig who is receiving an incredible education(and no playing time) at Columbia. Are you saying that Brandon Walker at Alaska Anchorage(D2), Mason Maynard at Azusa Pacific(NAIA) Shawn Deadwiler at Utah Valley State, QT at who knows, Isaiah Jenkins at El Camino(CC) or Terron Sutton at Azusa Pacific(NAIA) are in better positions then here at LMU? Not a chance. 4. "we got beat by a program with less talent, no excuses" Maybe less raw talent, but you have to realize that we have no seniors, our best two players are playing their first few with the Lions(and one is out hurt), and we are 7 games into the season. 5. "we need to be like Portland right now, getting it done" Portland won something like 9 and 10 games their first two seasons with their new coach. This is Coach Good's second season and I guarantee you we finished with more than 9 or 10 wins. Yes we invested money, but it is not an instant payoff. Defense should and will improve, it is teachable. Raw Talent however is hard to teach and luckily that is something we seem to have alot of. 6. "Let's stop support this team help them get a win, whatever it takes." - ? "Nobody should be happy without L. Davis playing. " - ?? "Like the Yankees you pay money to win and gut a team then WIN." - ? Like I said, I know you are just bitter cause someone you know got pushed out of LMU or something similar, but I think all non insane people have to see how the future is MUCH brighter now than it could ever have been during the Tention years. I am excited to see this Lions grow together and win. Go Lions

Very good post lamda. Dclem is obvouisly a little troll tied to one of tention's muppet players. That would explain her less than 10 posts.

Lively discussion this evening. Iron - I too have a bad feeling about Edgar's knee - he went to the dressing room after the injury and came back still limping with a knee brace - I am not optimistic about Edgar's playing time this season and I hope I am wrong. As Iron said, "Worthy also left the court under his own power" but lost his season. Lamb - hang in there - I don't have any specifics about the $$ but there seems to be some $$ issues here in dclem's comments. Personally, I am OK with whatever support I have given to LMU and its sports programs. The money has been returned 10 fold by entertainment with real (not made for TV) drama. Go Lions! And from my recent "research," we may have a reasonable chance to win our road game against Wyoming next week!

LMU needs to get things in order quick. 5, 3, ? win seasons. This cannot continue. dclem is not a Tention fan. My bottom line is we spent the money to win. We got GREAT recruits. I don't like someone that left to come back on our court and beat us. We should take it personal and we should have played that team like we did USC. Even without Larry we have players that played last year that are good. No defense does not allow us to win games. This is 2 years and the transfers in plus the talent recruited and the coaching staff should be more hard and hyped up for a game like this. I don't want to give anyone bragging rights. As I said in previous post I wish all the recruits well that left from Tention time but I also love our players but accountability on losses is all theirs now. The spread was 1 point on the vegas books so it was dead even in my book. Defensive stops, make the free throws and make the effort to shut down who UCSB thinks there best player is then we win. I take it personal and where it on my sleeve. I want to win, I don't want to wait until conference time and don't forget we don't have any cupcakes in our conference this year. Sorry win NOW and the quote from the coach says it all. We cannot take nights off. Quote from Coach Good - "Defensively we just were not good tonight," said Head Coach Max Good. "You are not going to win anything when you let a team shoot like that. When we did create turnovers, we scored from it. But we just didn't do it enough, and in the second half we didn't do it at all."

First time I've lost money on this team this year. Pretty disappointed in that effort.

Wow! "I want...I want...right the ship...do it now..."
You sound like some of my alum friends who don't buy season tickets and don't give a dime to the program, but make demands when they don't have any right to. Where are you coming from?
Learn the game at least a little, understand what it takes to win, provide support and quit b*tching and then you, maybe, can offer some constructive criticism.
