Only nine weeks until the Lion futbol season starts! Tonight soccer fans will be watching the gold cup final. The US national team will face the slightly favored Mexican national team at the Rose Bowl. It should be a great match on the Fox Soccer Channel. This will have to do for Lion fans until the end of August when LMU returns to Sullivan Field.

What's with College Soccer News? Maybe they can't really focus on next season yet They keep announcing this team has gained x number of recruits, this team has so many great freshman coming in.... The last announcement was Syracuse with 18 additions. Will that really make a difference this fall? I doubt it.

The Lions are the returning WCC co-champions! They have quietly been building year after year and will have a formidable veteran squad returning to the field. The Lions can even field an experienced all senior squad if they want. The Lions will be tested again with some tough early games and if they do well will be nationally ranked from early season on. In conference they will be early favorites with Santa Clara to repeat as champions. It's going to be a great season for the Lions!

College Soccer News posted an article on the Lions. www.collegesoccernews.com/index_files/Page2536.htmThey gave the Lions a 3 and a half star recruiting class rating and did a good job summarizing the Lions past and future outlook. The goals for the Lions again are to win the WCC and get back to the NC2As. The article and Coach's comments were both low key. But opposing coaches and teams will know they will have their hands full when facing the Lions this year. The Lions got knocked out early in the tournament two years ago and being overlooked for an at large berth last year was unfortunate. This will be their year. They are stronger all over the field. The future for Lion soccer is now!

College Soccer News has their preseason picks out and the Lions are slotted at number 19. Lots of the usual suspects are in this top 30 with UCLA all the way up at number two. CSN credits LMU experience for the early season ranking. The Lions will have to show with performance they deserve to be there. I have no doubts. Santa Clara was the only other WCC team receiving votes, as the season progresses look for them and other WCC teams to move up. www.collegesoccernews.com/index_files/Page424.htm

www.lmulions.com/sports/m-soccer/spec-rel/081611aaa.htmlThe other coaches think the Lions will repeat as champs. Everyone will be looking to steal points from us this year. USD and Santa Clara and the rest of the WCC will be lurking from the start to get a leg up on the Lions. It's only a poll though and the guys will have to prove themselves every game. But this is an exceptional group with loads of talent. Roger and Atar got preseason recognition but several others are just as deserving. It's a team game anyway!

I noticed Coach gave his first place vote to SMC. Most would have thought USD or Santa Clara would have garnered his vote. Another reminder that everyone in the WCC is capable of beating anyone else. You can't look past any WCC team. Focus on one game at a time!

The Lions start the season off with a tough matchup right away against Sac State. Sacramento has been to the playoffs two years running and knocked the Lions out of the tournament two years ago. The loss to Sacramento last year didn't help the Lions on selection day. So the Lions will come out firing it should be a great season opener on Sullivan Field Saturday at 2pm. CSN thinks so and has it as one of their premier matchup opening weekend. www.collegesoccernews.com/index_files/Page1293.htmThe Lion defense will be solid and we have lots of expienenced firepower up top. GO LIONS!

Check out the Daily Breeze again today for another article on LMU soccer, complete with photos of Roger Downes and Artur Jozkowicz. www.dailybreeze.com/sports/ci_18753491If the Breeze keeps this up the basketball team is going to get an inferiority complex.

Men's basketball has to show everyone something to earn the respect now given to both men's and women's soccer by the Breeze. I think we have the talent; now can we make it work on the court? Keep up the good updating Sullivan!

Lions drop opener 1-0 in OT to Sacramento, after dominating much of the play throughout the game. The Loins had the advantage 16-8 and corners 9-5 in regulation, but Sacramento bunkered in again and found a way to win.
Nobody said the schedule for the Lions would be a cakewalk, it never is but the Lions just couldn't put one over the line in this one. The sac defense was challenged but never broke and their keeper made some really tough saves. He was the only thing that kept them in the game on several plays.

The Lions have this week to fine tune their offense before the trip to Oklahoma. All the parts seem to be there, just a bit of timing and chemistry missing. Sac State's defense was a bit frustrating for the Lions, the hornets have to feel very lucky to have stolen another win from the Lions.
Almost a thousand fans on hand for the opener!
