Lmu football is still undefeated. I wonder is there is back up school for wcc- Seattle U would be a nice fit. Seattle U was in the WCC in the 70s and 80s-left when they downgraded to DIII. Went back to Di a few years back, but I suspect the WCC got burned once and may not be in a hurry to take them back. Other possibilities could be University of Denver (minus hockey and lacrosse) and a real sleeper, Grand Canyon University, Problem there is for-profit status even though this gets the WCC into the Phoenix market with a nice 5000-seat sold out areana. Dan Majerle (ex-suns) is the coach

He should help them quite a bit. They have a good level of talent but there's a fair amount of roster turnover and numerous players who are new or fresh off their missions. His leadership should make a difference.
There should be some good games amongst the conference's top three teams.
Can our Lions join that fray?

Winter's question at the end of his post is a good one. After opening the WCC schedule at Portland and Gonzaga last year between Christmas & New Year's, hopefully they'll get an easier WCC start and more time to incorporate Trevor into the mix. If so, I'll be disappointed if the Lions aren't among the top four teams in the WCC.

I too think Dunlap is in a good position and headed in the right direction. But what's frustrating to me is the lack of a signature win. We come so close to beating Colorado State, Oregon State, BYU twice-the second time it was when gersten's roof was going to blow off-and we come up short. I think our talent is increasing every year and now with our new assistant, it should only get better.

What should determine if we get into the top 4 in my opinion is how well Stefan Jovanovic and Manuel play. I think Stefan can make a big impact next season, especially because I think he's coming in with a chip on his shoulder; same goes for Manuel.

I am looking forward to the development of Tutu and Haney and well as what Manuel can bring to the table, and to further craft's point, Dunlap has a total of 0 wins vs top 100 teams (according BPI). BYU, Saint Mary's and Gonzaga give us at least 6 games per year to accomplish that, as well has 3 or 4 outside of conference too. In 2 years Dunlap is 0-20 vs top 100 opponents, going 0-30 would be pretty bad, especially for an "up and coming team". I definitely think we do it this year, especially considering how close we were a few times last year. Even without Jacko, we should be a better team this year.

Very good points lmu2015. We also had a heartbreaker against Boise State by 1 point; they ended up finishing 3rd in their conference last season. San Diego's new coach had a signature win over San Diego State his first year-some would say that was a fluke given he lost against San Jose State-but a win is a win. I'm hoping for at least 1-2 for the Lions. It really fires up a team's morale and confidence when it happens.

Compared to the last decade I'd say that Dunlap seems to be a decent recruiter and still a questionable player development coach. Is his evidence best seen in Jacko or Herman? A lot will be seen through the development of Tutu who should be an extension of the coach on the court. Good mid major programs are usually led by very good point guards. Recruiting wise he has his own Drew Viney in Trevor Manuel. Losing Jacko was big it would have made this team almost as talented as the Bayno year.
So in other words, a lot of Dunlap's legacy at LMU will run through Manuel and Tutu whom should have 3 years together running this team.

as someone who used to write for the loyolan...LMU sports information on the men's sports sucks. its very amateur for the 2016 age of information. And I'm saying this as someone that was there in 2004-2006. If that's how bad it was over ten years ago then how bad is it now? judging by the press releases not much has changed.

wow has anyone mentioned that both Gonzaga and St. Mary's have started in the Top 20 of both polls? Right out the gate, the WCC has two highly respected squads, and I'd rather that BYU will be a fringe top 30 team come somewhere in the middle of season. If there was any year to finish 4th in the WCC and get to an NIT its this year. There's a huge shot that the trio at the top all get into the tourney like during our 20-win season, what was that 5 years ago already?

Good thoughts slb - I think getting 20 wins and a few "signature" wins will be key to a significant post season tournament. That looks achievable this season if our good play continues - guards scoring well and big men staying out of foul trouble.
