They can have Dunlap. I’ll throw in a fedora.
Based on his success, in a short period of time, at Nevada Reno I surmise Eric Musslelmen would be their primary target.

That is a spot on review, definitely have the potential to crack the top 4, but players will need to step up and there will need to be consistent production (which starts with a consistent rotation). I have said this comment on this board a few times, but most college teams do a lot of interesting subbing early in the season with a goal of nailing down an 8-9 man rotation by the start of conference play. I really hope CMD does that this year.

Santa Clara thrashing San Diego at the half.
Looks like San Francisco will edge out St Mary’s. The Gaels made the game close late after the Dons pretty much controlled the game. Both teams showed me a lot more talent than our Lions.

I haven't lost faith for a few reasons: 1) Lions won a number of non-conference games by more than 10 points. 2) They did this, in large part, without Eli Scott. Finally, 3) the Lions defense-first/ball-control approach is a good one if you want to get some Ws. It's not that fun to watch but it can keep games close. The WCC is very tough and teams are going to beat up on each other. The Lions will take their lumps but will get some unexpected wins. After Zags, USF, St. Mary's, WCC is wide open. If you saw Pepperdine against USF, you will saw that the Waves team that beat us is playing really well. I predict 7 or 8 conference wins.

The Lions deserve credit and kudos for a glistening OOC record. But that record is as illusory a record as any I’ve seen in my numerous decades’ experience with basketball.
Early season wins over Georgetown and UNLV were impressive but I question whether they could win rematches. Beating Boise St was a credible win, but that’s about it. Feasting on the bottom half of a weak Big West Conference and several other low majors programs hasn’t given me any confidence in the Lions’ future this year.
The first week of conference play hasn’t changed my mind. We were drilled by the Waves. I agree our Malibu friends played well in the second half of our gam and against USF. You should be concerned that we were crushed in the second half by a mediocre team playing well. Then, on Saturday the Lions had to work to stay ahead of a very poor Portland team that doesn’t have a good player on their roster.
The Lions’ defense is good enough that they should squeak out a few wins, but they’re a long way from being competitive in the WCC.

I hear you Winter. I am choosing to remain optimistic at this point. I think it's realistic to think we will split with Pepp, SD, SC, BYU and Pacific and that we beat Portland 2x and that we might steal a win in 1 of our 3 games against St. Mary's/USF. We won't beat Zags. Am I delusional? Maybe but hope springs eternal.

After watching the first week of conference play: Gonzaga - no one is even close St Mary’s- their youth caused them to have a mediocre OOC but I was impressed by what I saw. They’ll keep getting better as the season rolls along and will be a tough out for everyone but the Zags. USF - looking good. Given the Dons and Lions were very equal just a couple years ago. The Dons are showing what a good coach can accomplish in just a couple years. They can press the Gaels for second San Diego - I missed their game against Santa Clara. Did they fall asleep against the Broncos?? The Toreros are good with some veteran stars. BYU - no front court, no point guard, disjointed play. But they still have almost unlimited fire power.
The Lions are going to need a top hat and a couple rabbits to pick up a win against the above 5 teams.
Pepperdine - give them another year, and they’ll be a force. As it is, they have some good players. Erratic play will affect them. I know Coach R has a crummy reputation as a game coach but his game plan against the Lions last week looked pretty good to me.
Pacific - probably comparable talent to the Lions, but Coach S gets a lot out of his players.
Santa Clara - how did they beat the Toreros? I Missed the game but if they can beat the Toreros, they can beat us.
Portland - horrible team with no hope.
I see 2 wins against the Pilots and a couple wins against our fellow bottom feeders. We’re simply too easy to plan for, especially now that everyone has loads of game tape to watch.
What’s particularly bad about this assessment is that I’m normally a very positive person. Ugh.

USD was missing Isiah Wright for their game against Santa Clara. He is out a few weeks due to wrist injury.
