Kyle Smith is such a good coach, he made Columbia competitive and now he is doing it with USF. If USF can keep him around they will be a borderline tourney team more often than not. Only critique about him is that I haven't seen him recruit that well. He is excellent at bringing 2 star recruits that fit his system, play hard, and then he develops them extremely well. But if USF is going to legitimately threaten Gonzaga for the #1 spot, they are going to need to start getting from 3 and 4 star guys.
Either way, I think USF has proven that they are a legitimate top 2-3 team in our conference this year and have officially broken the glass ceiling of the WCC.

From Jeff Goodman
"Santa Clara guard KJ Feagin is transferring, source told @watchstadium. Averaged 17.5 points and 4 assists per game last season. Broke thumb and has played just two games this year. Potential grad transfer. If that’s the case, look for high-majors to be all over him".
Eddy is playing well and give Feagin to play in a high major...makes sense.

Hauser went to Thousand Oaks HS. Not an impact scorer like Feagin but he averaged 36 minutes per game as a sophomore and 33 minutes a game as a junior. Maybe he would want to “come home” for his senior year.

Santa Clara grad transfer KJ Feagin (17.5 ppg last season) told @watchstadium he has already heard from Arizona, Iowa State, Nevada, USC, Cincinnati, Stanford, Oregon, Utah, Colorado, San Diego State and Northwestern.
I still can't believe CMD didn't offer him out of high school.

I still can't believe CMD didn't offer him out of high school. Its because KJ doesn't fit Dunlap's "System". Many coaches probably thought KJ was a black hole from an offensive set perspective. But as you can see if given the ball and responsibility he can really score and open the floor up. With how kids are nowadays I think its important for coaches to realize how critical it is to manage and handle your players and understand their strengths and weaknesses. We all know CMD can't do that. too big of an ego and too hardheaded

Despite all the early season hype about a “newly competitive” WCC, a few weeks into the season and we’re pretty much in the same situation we have been for the last 10-ish years. The Zags are way in front. BYU and St Mary’s are battling for second. USF is probably in that battle (the one difference). If San Diego can play their strong 3, they might join that party. If not, they join Pepperdine and Santa Clara as also-rans because they have little beyond their big 3. Meanwhile, Pacific and LMU slog it out for 8th and hapless Portland anchors the 10-spot.
Kudos to USF who is definitely on the upswing and probably Pepperdine. It looks like the bottom five are facing continuing mediocrity.
Regarding the Lions, there is absolutely nothing on the horizon to suggest any hope for things to improve. The upcoming recruiting class is looking even worse than what we’ve had in the past. Given what I’ve seen so far I have to wonder if CMD sees the handwriting on the wall and hasn’t even tried to do something for next year.

For me, the bright spot of the season was the 3-4 game stretch Douglas had before Eli came back, when the team was maybe 9 or 10-2, and we had a true freshman looking like an easy pick for WCC all freshman team, and thinking that him and Eli would be a pretty good duo on the wing for the next couple years... Douglas's disappearance in conference has been the biggest disappointment for me, and i do not blame him for it at all. It looks like CMD has made little effort to make Douglas and Scott coexist, and instead has just told Douglas to take a lesser role.

Coaching brilliance, I’m sure. We just don’t see it.

Not a lot to crow about but WCC season stats show individual steal leaders: 1. McClendon 1.8 per game 2. Batemon 1.7 and 6. Quintana 1.5 As a team, we rank second with 7.4 per game vs Gonzaga's 7.6. We are the worst 3-point shooting team in the WCC. wccsports.com/documents/2018/11/11/18MBB_WCC_Stats_11_11.pdf

Douglas's disappearance in conference has been the biggest disappointment for me, and i do not blame him for it at all. It looks like CMD has made little effort to make Douglas and Scott coexist, and instead has just told Douglas to take a lesser role. The offense has no spacing. Eli is an undersized PF (to put it lightly). Good bully-ball player, but since he can't create space for Douglas, Douglas can't slash to the basket. The ring around the Rosy offense has the ball just traveling around the perimeter and unfortunately Douglas doesn't get a lot of opportunity to just dive to the basket because its crowded with Eli and Markussen down there. I want to give Dunlap credit for bringing Scott and Douglass into the program, but really they are stuck in an offense that can't keep them both in the game at the same time. Ideally, Batemon would be driving into the lane and kicking out to players and there would be some shooting and slashing, but that's not going to happen. Eli can hit a little midrange now. I'd figure out a way to open up the court of Douglas. Honestly, the only way to play to their strengths is to pick up the pace and run the floor. Simply put, they need shooters. They haven't had floor spacing since the days of Dubois and Viney. I really like Eli and Douglas, and they should be a dynamic duo, led by a high scoring PG. But the lack of shooting is killing the pair.
