Stan Johnson has done an excellent level promoting LMU basketball and elevating the program's profile. His recruiting and on the court success have been a mixed bag. His first year, his had decent success with Dunlap's players (Scott, Keli, Markusson, and Douglas). His second year, the team didn't go well. This year, the team did some amazing things but so much of that was about Cam Shelton's brilliance. And even then, our three signature wins were by the narrowest margins. TO his credit, CSJ built a resilient team that never gave up and that grit was key to those wins but SO much of it was Cam. CSJ's high school recruits have been just OK. Eliott and Nobles brought nothing. Lamaj and Chance are solid players but not program changers. McBride seems to be our best HS recruit of the CSJ era. CJS's first transfer class had one home run (Cam) and 2 role players (Alex and Kwame). Last year's portal transfers were OK. Ahrens was streaky - sometime hot and sometimes he completely disappeared. Big Rick was a nice pickup really helped us as rim protector. Graham brings great energy off the bench so a nice pick up IMO. Markusson, Eli, and Keli all staying around when they could have transferred is a feather in CSJ's cap. I hope Stan sticks around for a few more years. If he doesn't, Cal better hope he recruits the next Cam Shelton because, without him, last season would have gone a lot differently and we wouldn't even be having this discussion about Stan leaving.

Loyolan reports that the Cal position is also considering Tim Miles, San Jose State, and Joe Pasternak, UCSB. San Jose State compiled a 21-14 record and lost to San Diego State in their conference title final game. They went to the CBI but lost there to Radford. UCSB was 27-8 and went to the Big Dance where they lost to Baylor in the first round.

According to Justin Byerly from Hoop Seen (looks like his beat is NC Central) Justin Wright took his official visit yesterday, Friday, 3/24.

Sure Cal is a higher profile job than lmu, but the pac 12 is trending down and Cal is bottom of the barrel there, and Berkeley is nice but it ain’t manhattan beach. Plus the AD at Cal is under investigation so not a stable situation either. If I were Stan I’d get lmu to the dance then wait for the big east, Acc, big 10/12 to come calling.

UCSB just announced a contract extension for Joe Pasternack.
Either Abdur-Rahim or CBJ for the Cal job.

If true, wonder which players may leave next?

Cal was 3-29 last season so Coach Johnson has his work on his hands. I predict they will improve this season.

Not that Stan isn’t deserving but it’s just our luck that our coach gets taken sooner than he should bc the Cal job is so unstable no one else really wants it

Why are we so sure he's going? To me, the Cal job is a clear step down. A worse team in a conference that went 2-5 in the tournament (compared to 4-2 by the WCC teams, and we only needed 2 teams to get those 4 wins). Ironically, Cal fans on Twitter are complaining about the potential Stan hiring, saying he's "more of the same," has "underwhelmed" and "hasn't moved the needle" at LMU. They must not have checked on our program since Bo and Hank.

Lionlife- it would be nice if you are right. We should await an official announcement before going too far. In the meantime, Todd Golden left USF for Florida after a quick few years of success, took over an 19-16 team and finished 16-16, went to the NIT and lost there to UCF 69-47. He’s in the process of “rebuilding the roster” this year but one of his top players has entered the transfer portal already. In his first year, 8 players from the prior year had entered the transfer portal and all stayed at Florida. The Gators play a tough schedule which included 8 teams in the sweet 16. Coach Johnson will face similar challenges if he goes to Cal.

As much as it sucks for us, if I were in Stan’s position and the rumors are true….I’d go.
Your window for a power-5 job doesn’t stay open all the time. Regardless of how awful Cal has been, any bit of success would reflect well on CSJ.
Not to mention, the cash. Mark Fox made $1.5ish mil this year, and I believe he gets paid the $1.8 owed next season.
If Stan can get something similar, that’s massive.
But man, what tough luck for the Lions program if true.

Pintens needs to move quickly to hire a replacement Coach . We are in the thick of recruiting season. Promoting an assistant is one route but not always a successful one.
