Until someone has something solid to go on, we should stop speculating. I understand folks’ quickness to negativism. After all, we are used to decades of bad news. But assuming CSJ is moving to Berkeley is a big jump. Yes, he’s been mentioned as a candidate and I understand he had an interview, but that doesn’t mean he’s gone. As another poster mentioned, most of Cal’s fans are underwhelmed by the thought of CSJ as their new Coach. While he has some bright moments during his LMU tenure, he hasn’t exactly set the basketball world on fire. His PR efforts have been outstanding and he’s gotten a lot of effort out of his players, but he has yet to prove himself as a recruiter and his Xs and Os capabilities are suspect. I don’t want to see him go now because the last thing we need is another “start over.” But if I were Cal, I’d be looking elsewhere. Let’s cool our heels until we hear something of substance.

I am in the minority, but I still think this program can dop better than stan johnson. He is a good speaker, represents the university well, but he is not a good x's and o's coach. His recruiting has been good but not better than BIll Bayno did in 3 weeks on the job. The caveat would be that they must open up their wallets if we want to get someone better

If CSJ does in fact leave, may I suggest Ben Howland as a possible replacement. He's been living in SoCal since leaving Miss St., has vast experience recruiting the west coast, and is looking for another opportunity as a head coach. Not to mention three Final Fours, multiple other postseason appearances, and the fact that his coaching career started at Gonzaga as a GA. Just my two cents.

Kyle Smith is another case. After a successful career at Columbia University, he came to USF where he posted 3 seasons of 20 wins before moving to Washington State. At State he has 3 years of basically 0.500 basketball with one exceptional season (2021-22) with 22 wins. In the meantime he has probably earned enough money to retire comfortably. Not a bad way to go.

Interesting that if they hire Mark Madsen that they are suggesting John Montgomery could be hired as one of his assistants. Montgomery‘s name just keeps popping up…in a six degrees of Kevin Bacon sort of way.
Hope CSJ stays and can put together a strong roster.

Great article Thx. So we’re likely to have our beloved Coach Johnson for at least another year. Happy, Happy. We should get to see McBride and Stan’s other new recruits when they are identified.

Stan may be the guy. He may be the guy before we get the guy. Either way, I feel better about the direction of the program than I did two years ago (although who knows, Dunlap actually built a strong roster at the end).

Looks like a scorer. He’s been a potential MEAC POY candidate for 2 years.

Some of his videos call him “unstoppable.”

Looks like a scorer. He’s been a potential MEAC POY candidate for 2 years. He was 2nd team all league this last year so I’m not sure about POY but 16 ppg is nice

I was reading up on him. PRE-SEASON he was considered a POY candidate. I have no idea how anyone else in the conference actually performed during the season. He certainly ended up with good numbers but obviously others ended up doing better. I’m assuming he’s a candidate for the 2-spot along with Sniper and maybe Noah T.

The MEAC is one of the weaker conferences in the country, doesn't seem like a great athlete but strong, crafty, and a good shooter - curious to see how he transitions to our offense and the WCC. I don't think we can call him our Cam Shelton replacement (just not fair to put those expectations on anyone) but definitely someone who should be able to contribute and have some big games for us. Looks like he got tons of interest as well from other schools, nice win for us in the recruiting world.

We definitely need more scoring options next season. This guy looks like he should become one of those options.
It’ll be interesting to see who CSJ picks up for defense. I know he pushes defense and last year the Lions exhibited some very strong team defense, but individual defense left a lot to be desired. As good as Cam was on offense, his defense was not good. I’d really like to see a PG coming in who can control the offense, at least be a threat to score, AND play strong defense. Combine that type of player with a couple good scoring options and the Lions can be competitive even with losing a nearly 30ppg guy. To be really good, CSJ also needs to find a top notch SF who can score and shut down other quality SFs, but every coach is looking for those players.
