Chance "Sniper" Stevens has entered the portal. You win some, you lose some. Wishing Chance the best. Interesting to see if he is seeking to get more PT and to develop his broader game or if he wants to be a hired gun for a big time program like ex USD sharpshooter Joey Calcaterra has done.

That’s sad to hear I guess it was his own call ☎️ He made a Manor contribution to the Wake Forest win with his shooting

Reese Dixon Waters, USC
BIO:
BREAKDOWN: Sophomore Reese Dixon-Waters is a 6-5, 210-pound athletic guard who has great basketball instincts and has the ability to help the Trojans both offensively and defensively. Dixon-Waters is expected to have a big roll during the 2022-23 season. He originally committed to USC for the 2021-22 season, but graduated from high school early and enrolled at USC in December of 2020 and was able to get invaluable experience as part of the 2020-21 team.
2021-22: Dixon-Waters played in 33 games off the bench and averaged 4.8 points and 1.8 rebounds. He saw his playing time increase during the second half of the season, averaging 20.7 minutes and 8.5 points over the last 10 games. He missed the Pac-12 semifinal game against UCLA on March 11 with a sore hip. He came back strong in the NCAA Tournament game vs. Miami on March 18, scoring a career-high 16 points, 14 in the second half to help the Trojans get back into the game after trailing by as many as 13. He scored 10 points and matched a career best with two three-pointers vs. UCLA on Feb. 12. He scored a then-career-best 14 points in the double-overtime win at Oregon State on Feb. 24. He made 34 of his last 38 free throws (89.5 percent). Among Trojans with at least 20 makes from three-point range, he led the team with a 46.0 shooting percentage (23-for-50).
2020-21: Dixon-Waters joined the team after graduating He became eligible on Dec. 12 and USC was set to open Pac-12 play with him in uniform on Dec. 13, but hours before the game it was postponed due to a positive COVID-19 test. He did make his debut vs. Santa Clara on Dec. 29 and he nailed a three-pointer on his first collegiate shot...for the game he scored 5 points and had a rebound in 5 minutes of action. In seven games for USC he scored 5 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Overall, he played 34 minutes over 10 games and scored 5 points and had 6 rebounds. He played in three of USC’s four NCAA Tournament games along USC’s NCAA Tournament run to the Elite Eight.
HIGH SCHOOL: Dixon-Waters was ranked as the No. 4 player in the state of California and No. 50 overall player in the nation by 247Sports.com. Waters averaged 17.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game in leading the Vikings to a 22-7 record last season. As a sophomore at Dorsey HS, Dixon-Waters averaged 18.9 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game.
PERSONAL: Reese was born on June 21, 2002.
Louisville and Alabama have reached out to him already, among others.
Would like to see this big guard on our new roster.
Go get him Coach Johnson!

He looks like the player we wanted Ahrens to be and more.

Wish Chance all the best. Surprised he and Anderson went into the portal. Thinking CSJ must’ve given them both a heads up that he was revamping the back court. Also interesting that Chance waited until now to do it. Best of luck to him.

Losing Sniper, Ahrens, Shelton and Jalin in the same off-season would be a huge blow at the guard spots. Really don't have the depth to take that blow, either. And if we lose and replace all of them, it's going to take ages for the new group of guards to jell. Hopefully, at least one of Sniper and Jalin return - ideally both.

Wasn't expecting Sniper to leave, feel like he was on his way to carving out a nice role for himself here - I don't think he will get interest from major programs so curious to see where he ends up as he also seems like too good of a player to go juco or D2/lower tier D1. An entirely new backcourt is going to be rough, but hopefully we can get 3-4 guys who all get 10+ ppg and shoot around 40% from three.

I think Sniper lacked patience he needed to become a WCC star. Guys on Gonzaga - better players than Sniper - sit for one or two years before they are ready to contribute to team success at the level Few expects. Hopefully Coach Johnson shares those same high expectations - yeah we aren’t Gonzaga- but we can think high and Coach is trying to bring good and experienced players to contribute now. I would have preferred that Sniper stay but it’s his life to determine. Best wishes to him if he does leave.

I’m not surprised Sniper has entered the portal. He showed us some good potential this past season but CSJ never really gave him much of a chance to put his skills to use. He will likely be better off somewhere where his coach will create plays and screens to take advantage of his set shot. I suspect the signing of Wright and the looong list of SGs and wings that CSJ is apparently chasing served as handwriting on the wall for this (too) impatient kid.

Players like Chance are just so essential to the "reload not rebuild" philosophy which is necessary to sustain success at every mid major program - essentially the Joe Quintana, Keli Leaupepe's, and Mattias Markussons.

First, obviously I meant Lavin, not Harrick (mixing up the hair focused 90s UCLA coaches . But what I meant was Lavin and Sendek are coaches bigger in stature than the WCC, but at the end of their careers. I think they’re comfortable and will stick around even if they’re successful. I thought LMU would be served to get a younger coach who was hungry to build, but unless LMU is coming with big money, they’re going to move up the rank. The WCC is one of the best mid majors but LMU has too much to catch up on in terms of fan engagement and facilities to be a “destination”. How much of the transfers has to do with uncertainty of Stan leaving?
Obviously Stan leaving at some point would feel like unfinished business, but look at Eric Reveno who never left Portland and now he’s a middling assistant.
In the past I would’ve thought Ben Howland as an idea was silly but now I kind of agree,
On the other note, I think Chance leaving is ridiculous if he’s doing it as his own decision. Perhaps Stan told him he wasn’t going to get minutes, but if Chance is just giving up after a year, that just seems very out of touch. He’s a slender-build freshman who needs a couple of years working out to get free and battle. Yes, Stan could’ve run specific plays I suppose but a lot of times Chance was physically overmatched with the ball. He would be a very good player once he can hang on the court. He can shoot.
Jay Williams said the other day that something like 20% of players entering the portal go unsigned elsewhere. That’s terrible and just seems counterintuitive to getting these kids degrees.
Having to completely rebuild every year with transfers is tough and makes winning in the preseason a challenge as these guys mesh. For a 2-3 bid conference, and two of those going to Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s, that will be a challenge. I would hate to see Stan just coaching year to year…

One more opinion on Stan - Zack Farmer of the WCC Unofficial Podcast, in his conference recap episode, gave LMU's season an "A" letter grade, stating "LMU gets an A because a lot of us, myself included, had them 9th in the preseason, and they ended up as one of the better teams in the conference..the coaching job Stan Johnson did was incredible." He also noted the contributions of Cam, of course, and that our team was generally healthy.
It's important to not move the goalposts as the season goes along when evaluating at the end. We wanted to beat BYU in the conference tournament, of course. But we never expect that if LMU doesn't get several signature wins both in and out of conference.
