Also, Riverside beat Portland so maybe that loss wasn’t so bad I thought Portland was one of our better WCC teams!

CSUN, without a win against a D1 opponent this season, just beat USD in Northridge 83-78. Our old friend Jawara with 25 for the Lavin Toreros, who fall to 7-7. USD is missing their 2nd and 3rd best players right now and unfortunately for them they have no bench

Riverside held Portland's best scorer to 13 points plus the Riverside bench shot 11 for 14.

Pacific beat the waves and the Gaels absolutely creamed Portland Zags eke out a win and the Cougars also creamed San Diego. Interesting season, it may be the Gaels year. Early Big Dance bracketology has only the Zags and the Gaels included from the WCC which seems correct.

Gonzaga pulled off another league walk-off win in Provo.

BYU played well enough to win. They hit a lot of 3s, and that has been a real weakness for them this year. The Cougars had a 10 point lead late in the game but couldn’t hold on. Too many bad passes (no PG). USF and Oirtlabd had a good game, very good actually. Portland won against what I think is the 3rd most talented team in the league … tho they’re now 1-4 in league play.
San Diego won their game. The Lions better be ready to play on Saturday!

BYU and CC Santa Clara both lost. Lions are now tied for 3rd in the conference.

Are the tournament seedings based on pure conference standings or are they using NET rankings again?

I'm guessing a combo of the two. Of course, league champs are automatic. From there, it's up to the seeding committee. A team's reputation seems to enter the equation - like a BYU or Saint Mary's. Newcomers to the Big Dance have to really earn the invitation.

I thought they were only using the NET rankings to see the WCC tournament because of the COVID-induced unbalanced schedules.
I’m assuming that since we no longer have a bunch of COVID cancellations, that we’ll be back to simply using end of season standings to determine tournament seeding. But I don’t know for sure.

I hope we don’t get screwed again. It should be at the very least based on standings, no “reputation”. It’s just an excuse to worship BYU and save Gonzaga to the finals. I know, I know. Vegas wants the two biggest fan bases to fill the in the WCC championship.

I couldn't remember if they instituted that policy because of COVID or because they changed the conference scheduling so that now some teams only meet once per season instead of everybody playing everybody else twice.

I can’t find anything official on the WCC sports site but a couple of the betting sites I could find said the WCC tournament seeding would be by league standings. As predicted early in the season, it looks like the majority of the teams are going to be pretty tightly bunched in the middle. I expect one or two games will separate 3rd place from 5th/6th place and maybe another game or so to the 7th/8th/9th place seedlings. It’s going to be interesting to see how well our Lions can stay focused and play up to the level they’re capable of playing.

As the weeks go by, that loss to Pacific is looking less and less bad. The Tigers knocked off Santa Clara today, giving the Lions a little cushion for 3rd place. The bad news is that we play Pacific again and they have some good guards that can break down our guard defense. Hopefully our bigs have learned a few things since that first meeting and will be ready to dominate the inside.

Tough loss for the Cougars. They deserved the win, playing neck and neck with a very good Gaels team. They’ve now lost to both St Mary’s and Gonzaga at home in last second shots.
I’ve gotta admit, it’s somewhat fulfilling to see the arrogant BYU in 6/7th place in the WCC. When they entered the conference they just knew they would dominate. It hasn’t turned out that way, yet their fans continue to diss the conference. I like the way they’re being “treated” this season as they head out the door.
