As the weeks go by, that loss to Pacific is looking less and less bad. The Tigers knocked off Santa Clara today, giving the Lions a little cushion for 3rd place. The bad news is that we play Pacific again and they have some good guards that can break down our guard defense. Hopefully our bigs have learned a few things since that first meeting and will be ready to dominate the inside. Issanza didn’t play at all in the second half of the first game against Pacific. We had ZERO rim protection that game. Since then Issanza has played a major role, so kudos to the coaching staff for realizing that not playing him was a major mistake… so yes I think will be better prepared for the Tigers next time.

Neveda beat #22 San Diego state last night. The Mountain West is awfully good at the top this year. That powerful Utah State team is just 5th in the conference, below Boise State (18-5 on the season), San Diego State (17-5), Nevada (17-6), and New Mexico (19-3). UNLV, only 4-6 in conference, is 15-7 overall. Reminds me of the WCC over the past few years - really strong, deep conference, but no shot at national attention.

And a pretty decent Colorado State squad that beat the Lions by 16 is near the bottom of the standings.

ESPN Insider article about possible coaching movement, who's on hot seat, who's in line for moving up in an opening. At end Coach Johnson is mentioned as: "Others who could move: Stan Johnson, Loyola Marymount Stan Johnson;" Pretty cool to read 'cause A: I really doubt Coach Stan is going anywhere and B: I can't remember having a coach in the last 20 years that it was even suggested might get hired away. Coaches from BYU, Santa Barbara and Irvine also mentioned in this category. Two interesting names in the High Profile names to watch section: Randy Bennett, Saint Mary's Gaels: Bennett has never really shown an interest in leaving Moraga, but if Arizona State offered him a ton of money to return to his home state, would he consider a move? He's having arguably his best season ever at Saint Mary's, with the Gaels one game ahead of Gonzaga entering the weekend. They're heading to their ninth NCAA tournament since Bennett took over. Jason Hart, G League Ignite: Keep an eye on Hart for any West Coast openings. He has a strong reputation at every level of the sport, after playing 10 years in the NBA, spending eight years as an assistant coach at USC and being the head coach of the G League Ignite team for the past couple of seasons. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/insider/story/_/id/35711696/your-comprehensive-guide-2023-men-college-basketball-coaching-hot-seat-next

I remember three years ago people posting that if we hired a hot young assistant and he did well and we lost him down the line because of his success, it would be a good problem to have.
Well, here we are three years later…
Hope he doesn’t leave, as CSJ really seems to be a perfect fit for today’s transfer portal environment, but beating Gonzaga and St. Mary’s definitely put Coach on the radar.

I think Coach Johnson has some things to prove in his first head coaching job. He waited patiently for the right job before coming to LMU. My personal opinion is that he will be around for a while - at least until LMU is the top dog in the WCC!

He needs to get us to the big dance, then it's a fair trade that he gets scooped up by a bigger program.

I wasn’t expecting Shelton to get drafted, but I do hope he gets a chance with a NBA team in the summer league.
Three WCC players drafted, I know Timme’s game doesn’t fit today’s NBA, but he was fun to watch for four years. His footwork is second to none, and I hope he has success overseas.

Julian Strawther ended up in a great spot that if he fails it’s really his fault. He cuts the mold of a Denver wing player.
Podziemski also will be trained to fill the spot currently held by Dante DiVincenzo on GS. People calling this a sleeper pick.
I still don’t get the Maxwell Lewis pick by the Lakers. Other than the fact that over the years, we’ve picked up Gonzaga guys because our scouts were watching players locally on Saturday nights. I remember Kupchak at games. Lewis didn’t stand out or show any killer instinct on a terrible team. Even if the coach stinks or your teammate suck, it’s the WCC you should at least carry your team in some way. Seems like he’s immature and going through the motions.
I hope Shelton makes a summer league squad but he’s probably destined for Europe.

Don't overlook Lewis's "upside" - which is kinda like the "hockey stick" in financial projections for troubled firms.

Gonzaga grad Homgren played for Oklahoma City in the summer league game today (Sunday). He scored 7 points in the first quarter but his body has a lot of filling out to go in play under the basket in the NBA. It wasn't clear what he did last year in his first year in the league.
